What Is Considered An Early Miscarriage?
An early miscarriage, or spontaneous abortion, is the loss of pregnancy
during the first 20 weeks of gestation. Miscarriages that occur particularly
early are called
chemical pregnancies. In cases of multiple early miscarriages, you should be evaluated to determine
the cause and pursue a treatment plan to resolve the underlying condition.
What Is A Spontaneous Abortion?
Spontaneous abortion is another term for a miscarriage, which is the natural
(not medical or surgical) loss of an embryo or fetus before the 20th week
of pregnancy, after which it is called a preterm delivery. Other terms
for this, which differ slightly due to the specifics of the occurrence, include:
-
Complete abortion: when all products of conception exit the body.
-
Incomplete abortion: when only some of the products of conception exit the body.
-
Missed abortion: when the embryo or fetus dies but a miscarriage hasn't occurred.
-
Inevitable abortion: when symptoms show an abortion will occur and it cannot be prevented.
If you have suffered from a spontaneous abortion, it is important to seek
medical assistance to identify and address the cause of the problem and
so increase the likelihood of a successful pregnancy.
What is A Missed Miscarriage / Delayed Miscarriage?
A missed miscarriage, also referred to as a missed abortion, occurs when
the embryo or fetus dies within the mother but an actual miscarriage did
not occur, and the fetus remained within the mother's body. It is
sometimes referred to as a delayed miscarriage or missed miscarriage.
As the woman's body continues as if the embryo or fetus is still viable,
there are usually no immediate symptoms of a missed abortion. While some
symptoms of pregnancy, such as breast tenderness, nausea or fatigue may
cease, a missed abortion is usually only detected during an ultrasound
when it is discovered there are no fetal heart tones.
This sad and frightening condition affects many women who want to have
children, and in some women occurs multiple times, creating even more
difficulty in future pregnancies. If you have had multiple miscarriages
or missed abortions, it is vital that your condition is evaluated to determine
the best course of treatment to resolve the condition.
What Causes Early Miscarriage?
When a woman suffers
recurrent miscarriages, there are many possible physical causes and identifying the exact condition
that led to the series of early miscarriages and pursuing a
treatment for that condition should be undertaken at once. Thorough testing is invaluable,
as it can identify the actual issue needing attention and from there,
an effective treatment program can be devised.
Some causes of miscarriage include:
- Chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo;
-
PCOS and other endocrine problems such as low
progesterone levels;
- Certain bacterial or viral infections;
- Systemic illness;
-
Autoimmune disease;
- Other immune issues;
- Blood clotting issues (thrombophilia);
- Exposure to environmental toxins;
- Emotional and physical stress; and
- Substance abuse
The mother's body may not allow the pregnancy to continue as the embryo
contains defects, which will prevent it from developing into a healthy
baby. There may also be immune defects which cause the body to attack
the embryo even when the embryo is apparently normal. Sometimes the body
is not capable of supporting the embryo and if this is the case, a treatment
plan can be devised, targeting the specific condition that led to the
failed pregnancy. The issues responsible for the multiple early miscarriages
may have their genesis in the mother or the
father, they may be chance defects within the embryo, or environmental factors
may be to blame. It is important to remember that in very few cases a
miscarriage is a result of something the parents did.
What Are The Treatment Options For Early Miscarriage?
After an early miscarriage has occurred, a woman's body will sometimes
need assistance clearing the uterus. In such cases, medical treatment
is necessary. There are several treatment methods available for early
miscarriage, including:
-
Dilation and Curettage – Dilating the cervix and scraping the remaining tissue from the
lining of the uterus with a curette.
-
Vacuum Aspiration – Sucking the remaining tissue from the uterus with a mechanical pump.
-
Medical Management – Giving the woman a medication that causes contractions in the
uterus. Most women on this medication pass the pregnancy within 24 hours
of first taking it. If miscarriage does not occur, surgical treatment
may become necessary.
