Dr. Braverman,

I just turned 45. I got married 15 months ago and in the past year I have had 4 miscarriages. We have had no trouble conceiving... the problem is staying pregnant. I miscarried last X-Mas at 5-1/2 weeks, miscarried again in May at 7-1/2 weeks, miscarried in October at 10-1/2 weeks (after hearing fetal heartbeat) and today I started miscarriage --4 at 5 weeks, 2 days. I went for an evaluation after the 2nd miscarriage at a major university infertility center. After running all of the standard tests, they couldn't find anything wrong and are blaming the misses on "advanced maternal age". They basically told me to just keep on trying... and that possibly a future pregnancy would keep. (Was that good advice?) I asked about PGD and they told me that at my age, it wouldn't be an option. (Is that true?)

I exercise regularly and am of normal weight. I am prediabetic, however, and mildly hypothyroid. In the Spring my doctor put me on 25 mcg of Synthroid a day and I am now on insulin (started that during the third pregnancy). After the miscarriage, he decided to keep me on insulin since I was planning to TTC again and he wants to make sure I have really good control of my blood glucose levels.

Is there any chance I can get pregnant with my own eggs and carry a pregnancy to term? I would appreciate your reply. Thank you.

There are always several questions to ask here

1. do I have a chance to get pregnant-the answer is yes
2. what are my chance at age 45 of holding a successful pregnancy-the answer is less than 5%
3. with my medical condition is it safe for me to be pregnant- the answer is risk goes up over 40 if you have any medical problems, in your case it is the prediabetes that increases your risks.

The decisison whether to continue attempting pregnancy is not a medical one and should not be based on my opinion, the facts are above, you have to decide if you want to take the above risks of time and expense to try. but once you decide to try then you have to go all in after it as your chances are so low.

I would be happy to help guide you if this is what you decide you want to do.
