Dear Dr B ~ I've just had a horrible case of shingles of the face & eye (HZO). The severe pain lasted a few weeks & the doctors are still monitoring my eye because in these cases there is a risk of blindness. This has been a frightening ordeal to say the least! All the doctors I've seen tell me it was the steroids (dexamethasone .75mg daily) that lowered my immune system, allowing the virus (dormant up until now) to attack. I'm only 43 and the vast majority of people getting shingles or HZO are greater than 60 - those who do get it at a younger age have some immune issue (HIV, Hepatitis, etc) or are on immune-suppressant drugs for extended periods. I was on the steroids for my recent DE cycle (which unfortunately failed). I'm very concerned & upset about this bcause I know the steroids will assist with my future cycles, but the doctors tell me using them again could reactivate the virus. I want a baby desperately, but I don't want to go blind! What are your thoughts on this? And is there anything else I could take instead of the steroids that do the same thing in terms of helping implantation? Thanks!

Thanks Dr B. I was actually going to set up a consult with you - and then I was hit with this! I'm still on the anti-viral medication. Waiting until I'm off that for a while before doing any immune testing - would like to get the medication out of my body first.

One of my doctors did suggest that I go back on the anti-viral meds if I choose to take steroids again - he said that would probably prevent the shingles virus from reactivating - but my concern is taking the anti-virals while trying to get pregnant. Do you know if anti-virals are particularly bad in terms of pregnancy? I know this isn't your field, but just thought I'd ask while I'm waiting for this shingles ordeal to finally be over. Thanks!
