A study shows that 71% of the melatonin supplement tested had a content that did not meet label claim

In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, where 31 melatonin supplements were analyzed for melatonin content, 71% of the tested products did not meet label claim within a 10% margin.

The variation between label claim and actual content was ranging from -83% (83% less melatonin in the product than stated on the label) to 478% (almost 4 times the amount claimed on the label)!

Within a same brand, the content varied by as much as 465% from one lot to another. Further, a controlled substance with potent neurological effects, serotonin, was identified in 26% of the tested melatonin supplements.
