Causes of Recurrent Miscarriages
Recurrant miscarriages are one of the most emotionally stressful situations that you can ever find yourself experiencing. What can make this experience even more difficult is not knowing what the root cause is. For many women who have suffered multiple miscarriages, they have likely hit a lot of brick walls with medical professionals not knowing what is causing their inability to successfully initiate or complete a pregnancy. It could be that they have unexplained infertility issues, that they
failed IVF cycles multiple times or other
types of miscarriage such as a
chemical pregnancy. Regardless, not having the answers often equates to an inability to fix the problem.
We at Braverman IVF & Reproductive Immunology are here to help solve that. We are led by Dr. Jeffrey Braverman who is seen as a leading authority in the field of reproductive immunology – the study of how the immune system affects pregnancy, namely how it can be the cause of multiple miscarriages. His knowledge of this field has led to him helping women successfully maintain a pregnancy after miscarriages for the last two decades – and he has been able to deliver well over five thousand babies throughout his career. This success has led to his clinic being named as the Best Infertility Practice in Long Island for three consecutive years.
What are the common causes of pregnancy loss?
At our clinic, we primarily focus on the immunological causes of miscarriages. We recognize that the immune system often plays a largely unrecognized role in the ability for a woman to successful initiate and maintain pregnancy – and when it is not functioning properly, it can be a serious problem. With a functioning immune system, when a women becomes pregnant, an embryo is introduced to the body – which is initially perceived as being foreign. However, the embryo is able to suppress the immune system and eventually, the immune system takes actions to protect the baby. When defective, however, the immune system is not suppressed and the women's own body can end up attacking the embryo. So what types of immunological causes can lead to miscarriages? There are many different factors, including, but not limited to, the following:
These can all play a part in causing a women's immune system to be defective and ultimately resulting in recurrent miscarriages. It, however, is also important to note that while we focus on the immunological causes of miscarriage, we also recognize that there are non-immune causes. Situations such as
toxic exposure can all contribute to
recurrent pregnancy loss. At our clinic, we strongly believe that you simply cannot be an expert in recurrent pregnancy loss, unless you are an expert in all causes. Since we are one of the few clinics nationwide with specialized knowledge of reproductive immunology, we believe this puts us in a uniquely qualified position to help rule out immune causes and rule them in. This means regardless of the cause, we can usually help diagnose and treat it.
