Dear Dr. Braverman,

I consulted you few months back and did all the immune tests and HLA matching. All the tests came back normal but the only issue was elevated fasting insulin. So you prescribed me Metformin (1500mg/day) and I started taking it few days back. I am having spotting after taking metformin. Is this normal? I am 4 days away from my periods and started spotting today. I also have high blood pressure. My cardiologist prescribed Methyldopa for it.

We are not trying to get pregnant for few months because of the blood pressure issue. Is there a relationship between high blood pressure and insulin? Is this a sign of PCOS? I have normal 28 day cycles and ovulate on time.
Do I need to stop metformin if the spotting continues? Is it safe to take metformin during pregnancy? Your advise is appreciated.

Thank you
Kalusai

yes it is safe to take metformin when you are pregnant, and ok that you have spotting as your hormones are readjusting to the change in insulin levels. yes there is also a higher incidence of hypertension with high insulin due to what is called the metabolic sydrome which again the metformin will help.
