I just found out my 9wk pregnancy baby's heart is not beating. This is the 3rd miscarriage of 4 losses (first was at 16 wks, third was at 10 wks) and the second was ectopic. The last one I took progesterone vaginally. I'm 39 now (been trying since 37) and have type 1 diabetes, celiac disease (which was confirmed via endoscopy in September so I just started diet then before my last pregnancy) and hypothryoid which is treated. Given all this, and that I've been tested and negative for antiphospholipid syndrome and the lupus anticoagulant problem and the genetics were normal on our last baby we lost....could my body simply be attacking the baby? (Reading your reproductive immunology articles makes me think that is possible). Am I at higher risk for this given all the autoimmune issues I have? And is there anything that can be done? I waited til the last few years to get pregnant as I really wanted to be controlled with diabetes and didn't feel I could do that until I saw the effects of the pump and now the glucose sensor. Thanks for your help. There is a fertility specialist here but my husband thinks all they will say is try again so came across your website and was completely impressed with all I have read/seen...thanks so much Dr Braverman....

Hi Carol
Yes the thyroid disease and the celiac disease do put you at higher risk for immune rejection . The vascular component of Type 1 Diabetes could also add a thrombophilic component(blood clotting). Were you tested for anti thryoid antibodies? The fact that your genetic testing on your loss was normal is also evidence that there is most likely an immune component. There are certainly many treatments as you can see from the website, you just need to zero in on the problem. Feel free to call me Im sure I can help you.

To my memory (I never got the results in my hand) they did not test for antithyroid antibodies. I had asked them to test for everything (of course) but I think they did just the two I mentioned. How many IVIG treatments does one do for a pregnancy, if that were indicated? Thanks so very much...Carol

The dose of IVIG is titrated based on your follow up immune testing. Usually it requres total of 4 doses.
